Mouse and Rat Exclusion and Deck Trenching – Pickering

Job Overview

Location: Pickering, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey residential home with rear deck
Problem: Mouse activity inside the home and rodent activity on the exterior
Service: Mouse treatment and exterior rodent exclusion
Visits: Three

Summary

Pest Control Pickering was contacted after the homeowner reported mouse activity inside the home. An inspection confirmed mouse entry points at the structure and more significant rodent activity beneath the rear deck. A multi-visit treatment and exclusion plan was completed to address both interior and exterior conditions and prevent further access.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached two-storey home with a raised wooden deck at the rear. The deck perimeter and nearby wall penetrations created concealed areas and soil contact points that are commonly exploited by rodents. Exterior utility and vent penetrations were present along the foundation wall.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing mouse activity inside the house, including noise and signs of movement. There was concern that the issue was worsening despite no visible exterior damage initially identified by the homeowner.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial inspection, active mouse entry points were identified along the exterior. Evidence of heavier rodent activity consistent with rats was also found beneath the rear deck, including disturbed soil and tunnelling. Several wall vents were accessible and not adequately screened, and the deck skirt allowed open access at ground level.

Photos taken during the inspection and follow-up visits show exposed vent openings, open soil beneath the deck, and the installation of wire mesh and vent cages during exclusion work.

Cause Analysis

Rodent activity was supported by ground-level access beneath the deck and unscreened exterior penetrations. The deck structure created sheltered conditions with limited disturbance, while nearby foundation openings provided direct entry routes into the home. Seasonal pressure and proximity to soil increased the likelihood of both mice and rats exploiting these vulnerabilities.

Treatment / Removal

Mouse treatment was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. Tamper-resistant exterior bait stations were placed in areas of elevated activity to control the mouse population.

Following customer approval, an exterior rat control program was also implemented. A one-way door was installed to allow rodents to exit from beneath the deck while preventing re-entry, supported by exterior baiting to reduce pressure during the exclusion period.

Exclusion & Repairs

Exclusion work included sealing multiple exterior entry points. Two wall vents were secured with galvanized steel vent cages to prevent rodent access while maintaining airflow.

A full deck trenching was completed, totaling approximately seventy-two feet. Galvanized wire mesh was installed below grade along the deck perimeter and secured to prevent burrowing access beneath the structure. Soil and landscaping materials were replaced to restore grade coverage.

Outcome & Confirmation

By the final visit, the homeowner reported no further mouse activity inside the home or attic. Exterior inspection confirmed that the deck exclusion remained intact and that rodent access beneath the deck had been eliminated. One-way devices were no longer required, and no new activity was observed.

Exterior bait stations were left in place as a preventative measure to manage surrounding rodent pressure. The property showed no further signs of active rodent intrusion at the conclusion of service.

Technician Notes

Richard conducted all inspections, treatments, and exclusion work across the three visits. All work was completed safely and in accordance with applicable regulations. Access under the deck was limited prior to trenching but was fully resolved once excavation was completed.
