Raccoon and Squirrel Attic Intrusion – Pickering

Job Overview

Location: Pickering, Ontario
Structure: Large detached two-storey house
Problem: Morning wildlife noise in the attic consistent with squirrel activity; additional raccoon presence identified during inspection
Service: Raccoon removal with squirrel exclusion
Visits: 3

Summary

Pest Control Pickering was contacted regarding ongoing attic noise during morning hours. An initial roof inspection identified active wildlife entry points along the roofline. While the original concern suggested squirrels, raccoon activity was also confirmed. A multi-visit wildlife removal and exclusion plan was completed to resolve the issue and prevent recurrence.

Background / Property Context

The property is a large, detached two-storey home with multiple roof transitions, soffit returns, and shingle-to-wall intersections. These features commonly create access points for climbing wildlife when gaps or weakened materials are present.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported repeated movement and noise in the attic during early hours, raising concerns about wildlife nesting and potential damage to the roof and attic space.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial exterior roof inspection, our team identified a primary entry point along the roofline. Evidence indicated use by more than one species. Activity patterns and entry size were consistent with both squirrel and raccoon access. No interior damage assessment was performed during the first visit due to time constraints.

Cause Analysis

Roofline intersections and soffit edges can loosen over time due to weather exposure and building movement. These areas provide leverage points for wildlife such as squirrels and raccoons, which are capable climbers and commonly investigate elevated structures for denning opportunities. Once an opening is established, repeated use can expand the entry point.

Treatment / Removal

On the approved service visit, humane one-way doors were installed over the identified entry points to allow wildlife to exit the attic space without re-entry. Separate exclusion devices were used to account for both squirrel and raccoon activity. An attic inspection was completed to check for raccoon young, and none were observed.

Exclusion & Repairs

Approximately four feet of soffit area was reinforced using galvanized steel mesh to prevent future access. Due to the height and layout of the roofline, a second technician was required to safely complete the installation. All materials were secured flush to the structure to maintain roof function and drainage.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the final visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way doors were removed, permanent sealing was completed, and all exclusion work was inspected. No additional entry points or signs of continued activity were found at that time.

Technician Notes

Grant conducted the initial inspection and oversaw the exclusion work across all visits. Photos taken during service show galvanized steel mesh installed along soffit and roofline junctions, as well as a temporary one-way door positioned over the former access point. Fasteners appear evenly spaced, and the mesh is contoured to follow the roof profile.
