Job Overview
Location: Pickering, Ontario
Structure: Large detached two-storey residential home with a second-storey roofline
Problem: Nighttime activity in and around the roof caused by raccoon entry through soffit
Service: Raccoon removal and soffit wildlife exclusion
Visits: Two visits
Summary
Our team at Pest Control Pickering responded to reports of nighttime noise and roof activity at a detached home in Pickering. An inspection confirmed raccoon access through a compromised soffit section. Humane removal and targeted exclusion were completed over two visits, with follow-up confirmation that no further wildlife activity was present.
Background / Property Context
The property was a large detached two-storey house with complex rooflines and soffit transitions. These elevated areas can be vulnerable to wildlife entry if materials loosen or shift over time. The work took place in April, with no weather-related limitations affecting roof access.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing noises at night coming from the roof area, raising concerns about wildlife presence and potential damage to the structure.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified a raccoon entry point at the roofline where the soffit had been pulled down. The opening provided direct access beneath the roof edge. Given the timing in early raccoon baby season, the attic space was carefully checked for dependent young, and none were found.
Cause Analysis
Raccoons commonly target soffit and roofline junctions where building materials can be pried open for access. Elevated roof areas offer warmth and shelter, especially during seasonal nesting periods. Once an initial weakness is found, repeated use can enlarge the opening and lead to continued activity.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, a one-way door was installed at the identified soffit entry point to allow the adult raccoon to exit while preventing re-entry. The work was completed humanely and without the use of traps or relocation.
Exclusion & Repairs
Following removal, approximately eight feet of affected soffit area was sealed using galvanized steel mesh to reinforce the roofline and prevent future access. The mesh was secured flush to the structure to maintain airflow while blocking wildlife entry points.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, the homeowner reported no further activity. The one-way door was removed, and the exclusion work was inspected and confirmed intact. No additional signs of wildlife presence were observed at the roofline or surrounding areas.
Technician Notes
The work was completed by our technician, Grant, who confirmed clear attic conditions during the initial visit and verified successful exclusion during the follow-up. All roofline work was completed safely with full access to the affected areas.
